A NEW Ford 2L 4-cyl. engine intended for its global vehicle line-up will far out-perform the 2.3L engine it replaces.

The Ford EcoBoost 2L GTDi first powered the European S-Max and Galaxy models, then the Mondeo where it rates 149kW at 6000rpm, with torque of 300Nm at 1750-4500rpm.

It has lightweight all-aluminium construction, the latest high-pressure direct injection, low-inertia turbocharging and twin independent variable camshaft timing.

Its combustion system is said to bring "new levels of performance and fuel efficiency to petrol engines in this power range."

The engine comes only with the six-speed Ford PowerShift double wet-clutch automatic transmission.

Fuel economy and CO2 emissions are much improved, Ford says. Compared to the 118 kW Duratec 2.3-litre automatic powertrain currently in Mondeo, CO2 emissions are cut 20% to 179 g/km, even though the new engine has 26% more power and 44% more torque.

Fuel consumption is 7.7L/100 km.
